Charles Wijewardena felicitated at the SLSRFR AGM 2023

Charles Wijewardena was the secretary of SLSRFR in
year 1989, 1990.

Charles Wijewardena was one of the best rugby goal
kickers & ruggerite.

He learnt his rugby in Kandy at Vidyatha College
played in 1965 and, straight from school he joined the
Sri Lanka Air Force and led them in 1972.

He later played for Police, CR and FC , Kandy Sports
Club and the country and was the best place-kicker
during his days and was called King Charles.

He had the proud distinction of captaining two service
teams Air Force (1972) and Police. (1979)

he manned the last line as an attacking full
back. He played hard, tackled hard, but never
played dirty or caused pain to others. He was
one of the first rugby player in Sri Lanka to
score over 100 points in a season from 1975
to 1980 and personal points tally over 1000
points in his rugby career

Prior to his appointment in the North, he was
in service in Kurunegala where he helped
young rugby players of Maliyadeva College
and Kurunegala Rugby Football Club.

At present the award for the most valuable
player in the Clifford Cup tournament which
is held annually is presented in memory of
the late & great Charles Wijewardana.
