The Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees as it is known today was formed on the 30th of April 1953 as the Ceylon Society of Rugby Football Referees.
This was formed with the approval of the Ceylon Rugby Football Union now known as the Sri Lanka Rugby Union .
The first rugby match in Sri Lanka was a sevens match played in Ratnapura in 1931 and the formation of a referees society was in 1953 .
The first meeting was held at the CH and FC pavilion which was housed at the Race Course with an attendance of 28 members.
The First Chairman was Mr CA Cameroon and VS Livera was the Secretary . SG De Zoysa assumed office as the second President .
In 1953 there were 36 match appointments made and today there are over 500 matches played.
Unlike in the past when 1 referee was appointed and the line judges were appointed by the club or school today there are a minimum of three and a maximum of 6 appointed for a match.
